Safer Solihull Board – 17th April 2014

Key Points of Wider Interest Discussed:

Although a lot was discussed, there is not much I can really report back on so this is very brief.  I may add to it once I get the minutes in case I have missed something pertinent out.

Change of head of Policing – Commander Sally Borner is being replaced with Alex Murray.  Sally is going to take up a regional post to look at the transformation of the police force.

Presentation on Hate Crime

Karen Edwards – SMBC Equalities Officer  & Sergeant Gregg Richards gave the presentation

  • There were more incidents of hate crime in May 2013 following the Lee Rigby murder – in particular there were more attacks on taxi drivers.
  • St Alphege & Chelmsley Wood are the two biggest areas of hate crime
  • 37% of hate crime is resolved

The presentation covered what hate crime was and a lot on what they were doing to raise awareness, with designated reporting centres.

I did ask about what support is available to those reporting hate crime because reporting is not enough – e.g. with Domestic abuse, women do report but then do retract, one reason being because the support is not there for them to sustain their report to court.

If you want to report a hate crime you can do so on http://www.solihull.gov.uk/hatecrime
