Employment rights of parents: changes in April

If your organisation’s policies on maternity, paternity and adoption rights have not yet been updated to take account of shared parental pay and leave and other statutory changes, they should be!

Maternity, paternity, shared parental and adoption pay

From 5 April rates go up from £138.18 to £139.58, and the earnings threshold goes up from £111 to £112.

Shared parental leave

Complicated new rules on shared parental leave are in effect in relation to babies due on or after 5 April and children placed for adoption on or after that date.

Antenatal appointments

* From 5 April primary adopters are entitled to paid time off to attend five pre-adoption appointments, and secondary adopters can take unpaid time off to accompany them to two pre-adoption appointments.

Unpaid parental leave

From 5 April unpaid parental leave is available for parents of all children up to 18 years of age.
