1. Action against Poverty

Priority has been focused on 3 areas:

  1. People who should be on ESA but left without living expenses
  2. Non priority homeless people aged 16 – 25
  3. Young people with disabilities making transition to adulthood (this has been impeded due to staffing issues)

Strategy and needs assessment is due to be refreshed.

2. Childhood Obesity

Obesity is not worsening but still a big issue. There is a widening gap between regeneration wards and non-regeneration wards (poorest). Programmes in place in Solihull but not comprehensive.

  • Eat Well, move more – replaces Living Well, family approach – online parenting course
  • Cook it – parent and children focused
  • Food Dudes – primary school based but due to be replaced
  • Meriden Park – Adventure Playground
  • Food for Life – growing schemes
  • Healthy Schools – 87% signed up
  • Bike it – encouraging increase of walking/scooting/biking to school
  • Solihull Girls Can – encouraging women/girls to take part in sport
  • NCMP – breastfeeding

Overall spend £400 go £500K per annum

Some gaps were identified:

  • Early years 0 – 5 provision
  • Maternal obesity
  • Whole system approach

3. Volunteering

Faizal presented overview of volunteering within Solihull.

Some stats: (from a play survey)

  • Formal volunteering is remaining static
  • Informal volunteering has increased

Faizal presented the challenges:

  • Not free
  • Requires co-ordination
  • Some areas are hard to recruit to
  • Looking at new ways of engaging
  • Time banks and time credits
  • Investment

4. Stronger Communities Review Outcomes

Melanie Lockey gave an overview of what is being done to meet the outcomes of stronger communities.

Lots of focus on community strengthening. Talked about a community building programme entitled “soup” (based on Dragon’s Den) – small scale funding for a start up.

The challenge was made that the Voluntary Sector should be seen as a partner in the delivery of these aims.
