I went to the chippie yesterday and left feeling chipper. Not just any old chippie, though. I was privileged to be one of the first through the door at the Chelmund’s Fish&Chip Shop, on its first day of trading at Chelmund’s Cross on the Chester Road.
A wonderful new not-for-profit social enterprise, run by local people for local people and giving employment opportunities to the previously unemployed.
A lot of graft has gone into making it happen by the organisations behind the shop, Three Trees Community Centre, Development in Social Enterprise, Olive Branch Kitchen and Churches on Chelmund’s Cross. The rewards are there to see, smell and taste.
Go, try for yesterday, if the sample I relished was anything to go by, business will be brisk and folk will come back for me.
This is the epitome of community enterprise, an exemplar of not for profit, meeting community need and generating social value all rolled up into one space. May we have more of it.
